Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise at the age of a small girl. The aunt was on the night shift as nurse to ensure she could follow her passion for theater and art throughout the day. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that art can be used to promote activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother with a conscience for social issues, and pushed DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay was a resident of Compton during the majority of her childhood, but she would spend every summer with her father's extended family in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay toured Selma in the summer months and was motivated to make a documentary on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she received diplomas in English and African American Studies. When she was in school, DuVernay was interested in creating for the broadcast media. She began her career as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to take a look at the junk of the home of a juror. After being disappointed in journalism due to the work she was assigned she decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay was offered a job straight after college as a new publicist at a studio. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. In addition to PR, the company developed several lifestyle websites like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
